Hi!
Recently I have been expirimenting with tables in Word 7.0 in Windows '95.
What I want to do is to get the width of all columns in the tables adjusted
to automatically fit the widest entry, the same as the what the auto-fit
option in Excel does. Here's what I do:
First I create a certain table in a Word document. The widths of the columns
are in fact very small to begin with. If I type a word in any of the cells,
the cell height is adjusted, not the width, causing the letters to word-wrap
all the way down. And this is how I fill out the first cel of each of the
other columns so that I have an entry in every column.
Next I click the top line of the column and whilst holding down the SHIFT key
I drag the mouse cursor to the right, selecting all columns in the table.
Then from the Table Menue I choose the option "Cell Height and Width" whereby
the W in width has been underlined. Then a two tab dialog box appears, one
for the rows and one for the columns. I select the Column.
Then in the column box it says:
Width of col 1-9: 1,04 cm
Spece between columns: 0,38 cm
which are obviously the current width and height.
I wouldn't think there would be any use for me to change these settings since
I want to auto-adjust the columns to fit the widest entry. So I clicked on
the "Auto-Fit" key, but nothing happens.
If I change the settings to pre-defined height and widths, then it does work,
but that's not what I want. I want each column width to adjust to the widest
entry. It will also not work if I select in the box as heigth "Auto".
So what went wrong?
Regards,
Charles.
