LT>Quoting Jonathan Defabritis to All:
LT> JD> DC = Direct Current
LT> JD> Hz = Hertz (Cycles Per Second)
LT> JD> kHz = kilo-Hertz = Hz * 1 thousand
LT> JD> MHz = Mega-Hertz = Hz * 1 million
LT> JD> GHz = Giga-Hertz = Hz * 1 billion
LT> JD> Thz = Tetra-Hertz (?) = Hz * 1 trillion
LT> JD> Tetra might not be the correct prefix for Hz * 1 trillion. Someone
LT> JD> please correct me if I got that one wrong.
LT>Fraid you did - it's TERA.
LT>Another thing ... can I ask that terms like billion and trillion are
LT>avoided as much as possible, as they differ in the USA and elsewhere?
LT>(In the US, 1 billion = 10^9 and 1 trillion = 10^12; other places it's
LT>1000 times this amount). (Except in France, who for some reason went for
LT>a Russian television system and an American counting system!).
very interesting comment about the french not being standardized
on the metric system..are you saying a french billion is 1000 times
more than 10 raised to the ninth power or (10 raised to the 15th
power)??
the following is straight from my us navy electronics installation
and maintanence manual (eimb) for reference data......
10(nth power) prefix symbol
10(12) tera T
10(9) giga G
10(6) mega M
10(3) kilo k
10(2) hecto h
10(1) deka da
10(-1) deci d
10(-2) centi c
10(-3) milli m
10(-6) micro u (my comp. won't make correct micro
this is as close as it gets)
10(-9) nano n
10(-12) pico p
10(-15) femto f
