Hello All!
Perhaps this will be considered too personal by some of you, but
I'd like to know the degree of severity of your case of polio and
how fully you recovered. I ask because I'm interested in how
great a shock PPS has been for you. Where I live, I've only ever
encountered a few other Polioers, and they were very light cases
who have shown no effects of PPS.
It's only fair that I give what I'm asking for, so here's my
history. I got Polio in 1954 when I was six years old. I spent
two years in hospitals, much of it in an iron lung. I guess my
case was pretty severe among survivors. And it's an exception in
that while my legs were affected, I was most severely affected
from the waist up. I've never regained any use of my right arm,
and can only use my left from the wrist down. My spine was fused
because I regained so little of my back and chest muscles that I
couldn't support myself. I've had an on/off relationship with
respirators all my life, and as I've gotten older, it's been more
on than off. Enough details. I've given you this to allow you to
understand the severity and permanence of my case. Polio has
dictated my life.
I'd like to know how much of a surprise PPS was for you; I always
assumed age would aggravate my condition, so the degradation of
age came as no surprise. But it has been no easier for that.
Thanks,
Les
