subject: Girl Can`t Escape Sexism 2/2

---cut---
"So how do you stop boys from trying to grab the teacher's attention?
You can't, David Sadker says, but teachers can run their classroom
better, whatever its structure, with more equitable teaching. "The
distinction is between managing a class and teaching a class," he says.
Myra Sadker says teachers and administrators can improve a girl's
education, and therefore her self-esteem and her future by just
following a few simple steps:
þ Check the curriculum. Are women represented adequately as role
models, historical figures or pioneers in science?
þ Make sure that examples of women achievers are on the walls of the
        classrooms.
þ Alert the class to gender bias.
þ Count, or have a colleague count, the number of times you call on
girls as compared to the number of times you call on boys.
þ Sexual harassment policies should be in effect in schools for
        pre-adolescent and adolescent students.
The real progress in fighting sexism in schools, the Sadkers says, is
occurring in independant schools. Public schools, except for the
isolated cases they hear about, are not addressing the problem.
"What's going to have a major impact is when parents, teachers or
students decide to take action," says Myra Sadker."
