Someone feels crushed, and I doubt any words will help. I am sorry for your
loss.

The same thing happened to me, and I'm afraid to say more than once. I live
alone in a quiet wooded neighborhood in Westminster. Each time I got the
bird back, and it was the case of not being clipped enough. the last time,
I sat up all night with the door open. About 4am, I heard the bird's
distress call and was able to hunt down the bird with a strong flashlight.
But I was lucky.

To the rest reading, there is no reason not to clip flight feathers. Birds
will take off and will do it anything you let your guard down. The bird is
only doing what is natural, and sooner or later, any owner will drop the
guard. A door, window or broken screen is all it takes. Magnolia Bird Farm
in Anaheim and riverside (California) will clip flight feathers without
charge. If you live near a seasoned bird owner like me, I'd clip for you or
teach you how.
