Did you know all of netlink's dns servers are NT4? Did you know one of my
web servers is IIS3?

You have fallen into the trap my friend. Just like all those folks who are
now madly trying to upgrade their NT4 servers to W2K or 2003 because they
found out they can't reinstall and patch with their trusted windows update
now that the NT4 patches aren't supported on windows update.

I have all the patches for NT4 and I'm comfortable handling pretty much
anything new that comes along either via a firewall rule or an isapi filter
or whatever I can even hire a programmer to code me something if I need.
Same with my W2K boxes, I have all the patches released to date and I'm
perfectly comfortable using it both internally and on the net.

Those who have moved to XP however are screwed, once microsoft shuts off
the activation server because they no longer support XP what will they do?
I don't know if you have noticed but XP has forced more reliance on MS
compared to past versions. People are using SUS, windows update, now it's
going to be spyware removal and anti virus, it's like they all forgot how
to manage their own systems without microsoft's doing half of it for them.

If you are going to depend on the vendor to do your IS (patches,
activation, support, security) then the vendor has a power over you that he
doesn't have over me. My existing machines are set for years and if I need
something new well I'll pick whatever I think is the best fit when I need
it.

I moved the entire company from a mini system to netware when we couldn't
get hardware parts for the mini. I moved the company again from netware to
NT when netware support for CD roms pissed me off so bad I couldn't take it
anymore. I'll move from NT4 and W2K to whatever is better when *I* decide
something is better not when Microsoft says it's time to move.

So do you want to start a date pool about when I move this news server to
something other than NT4?

Geo.
