We use 1/4 to 1/2 inch slices.  Boil the whole thing, and freeze what you 
don't use.  Then you can drop them in straight from the freezer.  My plecos 
will camp out on top of the slice, so sometimes I'll throw in an extra one 
for the barbs to nibble on.
