Actually, it means training the horse to accept the bit..you know...putting 
the bit in their mouths when they're young, letting them get used to it, etc.

It's a jointed snaffle with a small metal plate between the two pieces. Very 
mild bit.  Not to be confused with a Dr. Bristol, which also has the plate, 
but it's angled amd a little bigger, I think,  and applies far more pressure.
