You don't have to keep it off, just turn it off then boot to safe mode or
hold the shift key down while booting and when it comes up run AVG and it
should be able to remove the virus. Once it's gone you can re-enable it if
you think it's a useful feature. Personally I think it gets used more by
virus writers then by users but I'm exposed to a lot of infected folks
since I work for an ISP.
