Amazons will do anything for food. Some birds love to cuddle, Amazons love
to eat. A reward should be something they enjoy. Amazons, however, gain
weight very easily. When they perform, the food reward must be tiny so the
bird does not take up a lot of time eating or their is too much time spent
watching the bird eat and not seeing him perform. They need a small treat to
help keep their weight under control. I take a small jar of shelled
sunflower seeds. After a trick is performed, I break this seed into halves
or thirds and give the piece to the bird. This might be too small for a
parrot the size of a macaw or cockatoo, but it is perfect for an Amazon.
