What you are describing is a 1/4 wave similar to that on my car.
I use the Max-Rad mount with a 1/4 wave antenna for city and
switch to a 5/8 wave base load for urban use. The bracket is L
shaped and attaches to the inside edge of my trunk opening with
three screws. Hustler also offers a 1/4 wave, model THF, with a
trunk-lip mount which attaches without drilling. Cushcraft's
model CS-147T is a trunk-lip mount with 49 inches of whip which you
can trip to 1/4 wave. And I've seen the same set-up in a local
store's MFJ display but can't locate it in their 1996 catalog.
Prices range from about $25 to $60 new, depending on brand.
