  My neighbor's XP machine was toasted in this fashion.  It was confusing
because the failure coincided with a virus detection.   After looking
everywhere for the virus, I finally figured out that the virus had been
removed.  The XPSP2 install had previously failed, the rollback failed,
then when 834707 came down, it trashed the system.

   In the end we couldn't recover his system.
