With a proper identification and a brief and reasonable reason, most citizens
are more than happy to help any way that they can. In my one case of
commandeering a vehicle in my 21+ years of duty, the husband drove and his
wife and kids were in the car. A murder suspect had several blocks of a head
start on me, and we were both on foot. I had him stop well out of danger and
made the arrest after a short foot pursuit. The good citizen received a nice
letter from the Chief of Police and was recognized at our annual awards
banquet. There was only a very brief pause before he started driving. I
promised I wouldn't place his family in danger, and we were off to catch the
bad guy.
