Having also been burned by a rash of laptop HD failures, I'm running a
drive temp util on all of them.  I can't see a lot of correlation yet. 
Most of the laptops that cross my path (PIIIs and Centrinos at this point,
plus their Celery equivalents) seem to run the drives in the 35-41C region,
a bit hotter than desktops.  This might be a good reason not to cuss too
much at 4200 rpm - it's cooler.

The failures have been mostly Hitachi, but they seem to have the bulk of
the OEM 2.5" drive market.  I'm omitting from this discussion the P4
laptops that run the HD at 50C plus - these are just suicidal for component
health, as I've said here before.
