whether the feature is enabled or not.

That could be a possibility because OpenXP writes an empty message in the
messagebase every time a new file has been processed in a file echo .....

So, casting your mind back to the time when you said that you'd had some
sort of messagebase corruption, maybe one of your messagebase files is
still corrupted and maybe OpenXP is trying to write to that messagebase
file but can't.
