The two failures I've seen in the past 30 days have both been Hitachi (IBM)
thinkpad 40 gig drives. Both are in P4 thinkpads but they don't get all
that hot. I replaced one with an 80gig Hitachi and after a few weeks it's
starting to act up as well with "device failed to respond in
time" message in event log.

This is too weird.
