======================================================================== * * * SKY & TELESCOPE's SKYWATCHER'S BULLETIN - November 2, 2004 * * * ======================================================================== Welcome to S&T's Skywatcher's Bulletin. More information on the items below is available on our Web site, SkyandTelescope.com, at the URLs provided. (If the links don't work, just manually type the URLs into your Web browser.) Clear skies! ======================================================================== VENUS MEETS JUPITER Venus and Jupiter have a majestic conjunction in the hours before dawn on November 4th and 5th. The two blaze at magnitudes -4.0 and -1.7, respectively, and rise in the east about three hours before the Sun for observers at midnorthern latitudes. http://SkyandTelescope.com/observing/objects/planets/article_1364_1.asp ___--------------------------------------------------------------------- A RARE GLIMPSE OF MARE ORIENTALE Spectacular Orientale is the youngest large lunar basin, but it's centered just beyond the western limb of the Moon. Fortunately, favorable librations tip the Moon so that Orientale's main rings and mare lava flows occasionally come into view. The brief Orientale observing season is now upon us; the first opportunity occurs before dawn on November 8th. http://SkyandTelescope.com/observing/objects/moon/article_723_1.asp ___--------------------------------------------------------------------- A DAYTIME OCCULTATION OF JUPITER The thin waning crescent Moon will occult the second-brightest planet as seen from much of North America on Tuesday, November 9th. The catch is that it will happen in broad daylight, around midday or late morning, with the Moon and Jupiter generally being a little higher than the Sun and fairly far off to its right. http://SkyandTelescope.com/observing/objects/occultations/ ___--------------------------------------------------------------------- NOVEMBER METEORS The weak, long-lasting Taurid meteor shower produces up to 8 or 10 meteors per hour throughout early and mid-November. The much more famous Leonids are expected to peak on Wednesday morning, November 17th, well after the crescent Moon has set. http://SkyandTelescope.com/observing/objects/meteors/article_1362_1.asp ___--------------------------------------------------------------------- SKY AT A GLANCE Saturn is to the right of the Moon on the evening of the 3rd. To read more about what's happening in the night sky this week, visit "This Week's Sky at a Glance": http://SkyandTelescope.com/observing/ataglance/ ___--------------------------------------------------------------------- MARCH 2006 TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE CRUISE: MEDITERRANEAN VOYAGE (Advertisement) SKY & TELESCOPE and TravelQuest International invite you to cruise the Mediterranean and enjoy 4 minutes of totality from the Libyan desert.
