subject: Re: Odd reboot/shutdown problem w/XP

From: Chris

Do the letters FUBAR mean anything to anyone? ugh....

Anyhow, I tried restoring the image from the networked drive (a share on my
computer). That seemed to go ok and then the computer asked me to reboot
to finish restoring some files. Fair enough... I rebooted and the next
thing I got was a BSOD - PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED, Stop 0x0000006B,
(0xC000007A, 0x00000008, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). So, I reboot again, but
this time, I (stupidly and randomly) boot off of the XP CD and use the
"Automated System Recovery" tool. Next thing I know, it's
formatting the hard drive and now I'm thinking...oh crap, but I can't
reverse the format (with the tools I have). It finishes it's work and asks
for the backup file location, but complains because there is no Z: drive
(duh...it's a share). I try to use a UNC path and then find out that the
network stack is not loaded such that I can use the network.

So, here's my position now, I've got a 10 GB .bkf file on my computer and a
hard drive on my mom's computer that needs that backup restored to it, but
no way to get it there (for now).

1) Is there a way to compress the .bkf file and keep it in .bkf format so
I might be able to put it on a DVD?

2) If I compress the .bkf file, will I see enough space savings to make it
worthwhile?

3) Is there any way to split an existing .bkf file onto multiple DVD or
CD's without losing the security info of that system?

4) If I remove the drive from my mom's computer and connect it into my
computer and then restore the backup to it, will the security info get
screwed over?

(If only I had ghost)

5) Does anyone have any hair to send me? I think I've pulled most of mine out.

6) At this point, maybe it's worth just reloading from scratch...would
make the system run better. Comments?

/Chris
