The Pleco problem may be related to the fish hitting puberty.  We had the 
same thing happen recently.  I'd look into backing off a little on your 
feeding anyway.  We also find that our pleco has less of a colon problem when 
we feed him boiled zuccini slices.  I'm not sure, but I think it may be more 
nutritious than what he gets from the tank bottom, so he passes less of it.
The snail shell problem is usually indicative of acidic water.
