I wish to differ!!! I think that steam was grosly un-econimic and it was only 
a natural course of progression to convert to diesels.
The sights and sounds of U-boats and early EMD power draging heavy freights 
are far more impressive and display more "charisma" than a fuel greedy, high 
maintanence steam loco.
The "Iron Horses" from a ageing era have been put out to pasture, never to 
return!!.
