Clipper is a database oriented programming language that
basically has a compiler and a linker that can produce an .EXE
program.
The compiler translates program source (.PRG) files into an
object (.OBJ) file. The linker takes one or more object (.OBJ)
files and "links" them together to produce an executable (.EXE)
program (application or utility). Usually the end result .EXE
is used to maintain database files.
Originally Nantucket Corporation's (Clipper Winter '85) was
designed to produce directly executable programs that would
handle Ashton-Tate's dBASE files.
Over the years, Clipper has developed into a seperate dialect
from the dBASE product, providing it's own methods/solutions on
how to develop database programs.
So I guess this is what you wanted to know.... or probably more
than you wanted to know.
