I just got off the phone with one of my students who is having problems
with her sons school. I told her that she should request, in writing,
that she be provided copies of all documents, tests, etc. that will be
considered at the IEP meeting and that she should request that she be
provided these copies at least two weeks before the meeting, as she
wants her advocate (me) to be fully prepared.
She got a phone call from the school asking what the problem was and why
she felt she needed and advocate. Her response was that there are many
problems, that she will air them at the IEP meeting, and that she needed
an advocate because she did not trust some of the people her son has
been in contact with.
While she received the copies, the school had the nerve to send redacted
copies (those are copies where certain things are blacked out). She
called and wrote, and demanded clean copies. No response. A complaint to
the State Ed department, however, got her a response and the copies in
their original form, except, they have been re-typed, with the redacted
material omitted. This is getting very interesting.
BTW, the redacted material seems to concern itself with the specific
teacher and administrator the child is having a problem with. Perhaps
the psychologist knows more about them than meets the eye.
