It's called "civic pride". We in Denver are in the process of approving a
ew
stadium for the Broncos. The effort started WAY before SuperBowl XXXII. A
primary motivation is, and has been, the fact that many of us are embarrassed
to have the old one seen on national TV.
Also, when Coors Field was in the planning stages, the taxpayers intructed
he
commission to cut no corners - we wanted the best, and we got it. A design
good enough to be adopted by other cities in the past 3 years, once the other
cities' planners were able to see the functionality of this park. Much of
he
derogatory publicity about the park and the effects of the altitude are
envy-generated. You heard it before the new park was built, even. Our
tax-base evidences a strong sense of pride in our sports clubs. Even the
Nuggets are getting a new arena, and they're the worst in the league right
now. Wait till PEPSICO arena opens next season! Pride in the new "house"
will mean more wins! (of course that's not hard to do when the team is below
a .100 average).
