Well first of all we need to know the version of QModem you are using.  I am 
assuming the test drive version.  
In answer to your first question, yes there is a Windows version of Qmodem
put out by Mustang Software.  Not bad, in my opinion, but as far as Windows
comm programs go, I still like Procomm.
Second question, if you are using the test drive version, you are halfway
there.  I am assuming you have selected your programs to download.  Those
garbage characters are from the remote BBS.  Hit Page-Down.  A menu screen
will pop up.  Select "Z" for Zmodem (assuming that is what protocol you
selected from the remote BBS).  A prompt will appear asking you which
directory you would like to download those files to.  Once you hit enter the 
download will begin.
