1:photographic record of who was charged, Many times we have had "mugs"
  try to deceive us by claiming to be someone else, The "Mug Shot"
  however did not lie.
2: The case number or identification file number that the picture is
   assoicated with.  This is the number used to track the photos and
   likely all other documents assoicated with this subject in the police
   fileing system
3: More angles means more things to look at when identifying the subject
   There are supposed to be a number of people with "My" face out there
   (If the number of people who insist I went to their school is any
   clue)  But not many have my profile as well... The more points of
   identification you have, the more positive the ID.
Recently we had just such a case. Man wanted on FELONY chargds had
managed to get a new driver's license with a name that was just a bit
different.  My better than the average troopers acted confused by the
simulairaties and had me call the IDENT section to have them fire up the
printer.  I called, Read them the number from the photo (Which was
included in the felony warrent info) and they printed the same.
They hauled his mug down to the IDENT and held the Mug Shot up beside
him... Same face... Same profile... (Same fingerpirnts too it turns out
from later investigation)  New residence for him.  Gray Bar Hotel.
