The "database" is a bunch of .DBF files, we have something called
"Advantage Database Server" that allows us to address the data
using (very basic) SQL.

Serialized, very interesting... we just learned that ADS actually WRITES TO
DISK AS A TEMP TABLE the result of any query that includes a join. (!)

I don't actually know what a semaphore is in this context but a few days
ago the guys who were monitoring it did say something about semaphore bytes
getting corrupted.
