Hi there Charles. First off, there are some in this echo that have been
doing this for a very very long time, and have a vast amount of experience.
I've been trying to learn what I can from them, and my own experience, but
please feel free to take their advice over mine.
Maybe I'm way off base here (which is quite possible) but are you giving the
tank time to cycle? There's all kinds of organisms in the tank, and the
rocks, and as they develop, they help to consume the waste that the fish
produce. If you're changing all of the water, and washing your rocks, etc,
every week, then it's very unlikely the biological cycle will ever get
established. From what I've been reading here, and my own experience, I take
out and replace about 20% of the water in my tank every two weeks. While
doing that, I use a gravel vacuum, which works on the basis of siphoning, to
vacuum the gravel, sucking up the larger waste products and such. I replace
this water with water that's been treated for ph, and treated to remove any
chlorine. From what I've seen, it is not at all uncommon for a tank to get a
bit cloudy and such shortly after it's been established. This should settle
down after a week or less. If it's staying really cloudy, or growing stacks
of algae, I'd suspect that you're leaving the tank lights on a LOT, or over
feeding. It's surprising, but they really don't need very much food.
Again, please excuse me if I'm telling you something you're well aware of.
