I have one machine which has run for a year or so off an external 250 GB
USB2 disk w/o problems. Periodically I dump/backup the disk to it's twin
& then run off the twin for a while.

The disks are labelled  1 & 2 & periodically 1
is on the shelf while 2 does the work & then 2 get's dumped to 1 &
it's swapped.
