Hello, Alan...
[Fancy seeing you here :) ]
Sunday March 08 1998, Alan Hess said to Bob Strouse:
BS>> I DO THINK HE BET ON THE MLB, BUT THE PUNISHMENT FOR HIS CRIME
BS>> WAS EXTREME. DOC GOODEN WASN'T FORCED OUT 4 LIFE FOR DOING DRUGS,
AH> Drug users have never thrown a World Series, or arranged to have one
 AH> thrown. Gamblers have.
After reading Al Stump's book about Ty Cobb, I wonder why the HOF excludes
Rose, given that Cobb admits to killing someone in Detroit in 1912 (+/-).
And here, Cobb was the first player INTO the HOF. He may have been great on
the field, but I don't know that I would have wanted him at my BBQ. :)
BS>> YET IF YOU BET ON A GAME, YOUR GONE! I PERSONALLY THINK IT IS
BS>> OUTRAGOUS AND A DISGRACE THAT PETE ROSE IS NOT IN THE HALL OF FAME. HE
Actually, Bob, Pete Rose's accomplishments and many of his memorabilia ARE in
the Hall of Fame. Rose is "simply" not one of the lucky few to have a plaque
in his honour, given his off-field accomplishments (which, if you recall, are
considered when a player is up for induction. I seem to recall this has
bitten Orlando Cepeda on the ass a few times as well.). The HOF recognizes
his on-field accomplishments, but they also recognize the off-field ones;
hence, the ban.
BS>> WAS A REMARKABLE BALL PLAYER AND DESERVES TO GET WHAT HE EARNED
AH> Which is exactly what he got.
What is it that we say in another echo, Alan, regarding actions and
consequences? :)
I'm actually sympathetic to Rose's case, given that Rose was one of THE
players my group worshipped when we were all growing up. We used to have
arguments as to who was going to "be" Charlie Hustle in the day's baseball
game, and having a Pete Rose baseball card put you up at the top of the list.
I was fortunate enough to be at Riverfront Stadium (whatever the hell
they're calling it here in the commercialized 90s) this past fall when Pete
Rose, Jr. played his first game. It was absolutely eerie to see "Rose 14"
standing there at third base after so many years, and FWIW, at least one
"Reinstate Pete Sr." sign was removed at the request of the ushers.
