                             Modem War Revs Up
Battle of the century between 56kbps & x2.
This has been a bad battle year for modems. Of course it
does mean price wars. Which means this is the time to upgrade
your dinosour 9000Kbps modem. US Robotics is offering x2 56kps
modems- which potiontally offer twice the download speed of
28.8Kbps modems that have ruled in recent years. Rockwell,
Motorola, and Lucent meanwhile are offering what they call
K56flex.
Both modems essentially reduce the amount of noise over
analog phone lines, enabling them to work more like digital
lines. US Robotics was the first to offer this service. But
Motorola soon came out with K56flex. Analysts see a potential
market of $3.8 billion by the year 2000.
Luckly for us an end to this confusion is in sight. The
International Telecommunications Union (ITU), based in Geneva, is
expected by the end of this year to choose either x2 or K56flex
as the recognized protocol. What ever company's that lose are
going to go out of business pretty fast.
Line noise may still affect connections, and for the time
being the Federal Communications Commission has barred
transmission speeds faster then 53Kbps due to line power
regulations. Also these new modems are asymmetrical, meaning that
while downloads come in at 43Kbps to 53Kbps, uploads are slower-
in the 28.8Kbps range.
