subject: What`s a NORMAL network throughput?

MO> Is 357,1 Kb/sec the maximum performance for the NE-2000 NIC?
 MO> and 277,7 Kb/s the max. performance of a NE-1000 NIC?
Those numbers are about right.
MO> And wat is YOUR average NIC througput?
1100 Kb/s, as measured by my home brew line-brutalizing metrics utility. This
was achieved with Compaq Netflex PCI on a 150mhz Pentium server with Compaq
Fast SCSI drives. The workstation was a Compaq 120mhz Pentium Deskpro with an
Intel EtherExpress Pro/10 PCI adapter.
Generally, most computers will keep up with any adapter when under low load;
one computer accessing a server for a benchmark is definitely low load. My
large-block ballparks for assorted cards are:
NE-1000: Should be put out of its misery.
NE-2000: 380
Intel EtherExpress Pro/10 ISA: 750
Intel EtherExpress Pro/10 PCI: 1100
As I'm fond of saying with regard to NT and NE-2000 products: "It's the
slowest [single processor server][network adapter] money can buy".
It's worth noting that I've maxed out an Intel ISA adapter on a Dell 386/25.
Small-block benchmarks are also interesting, but more for the astronomical
packet counts they generate than for the throughput, which drops
considerably. Unfortunately, I don't walk around with those numbers in my
head anymore because I install exclusively Intel PCI/100 adapters.
