subject: Vehicle Searches

EN> It is the U.S. Supreme Court which is reviewing the case and a
EN> decision should be coming down in June (?).
LT> June soundsabout right (Capt. Mahlin said sometime this summer).
LT> Btw, how did you know?
EN> As I scan newspapers I zero in on things like pending cases before
EN> the vestal virgins of the potomac. I noticed that one a few days
EN> before it was mentioned here. Texas law is very similar to Iowa
EN> law in these cases (full custody traffic arrests and search
EN> incidental thereto) so I had some interest in it.
What particular newspaper did you see it in? Was it your local or an
out of state editorial?
EN> BTW, I disagree with the good captain. I think the search will be
EN> upheld (of course, it won't be the first time I was wrong).
Although I was surprised to learn about it (the police having the
power), I hope the search(s) will be upheld. I think the police, in
general, need all the help they can get (I'm sure I will hear from
those who think otherwise). Speaking for myself, I have no problem
with an officer searching my vehicle... the most he or she would find
are my sons' stale cookies and french fries. :)
BTW, if you happen to hear what the final outcome is, would you let me
know as I'm not always able to keep up with these things. It's good to
hear from you... stay safe!
