I hesitate to answer on the grounds that its a Ford we're talking about. =)

I can't remember if the Modified is internally or externally balanced.
The Cleveland was externally balanced, and I believe the 351W was
internally balanced like the rest of the Windsor engines. Adding to
the confusion was the Boss 302 which was based on the 302 bottom end
with 351C 4bbl heads!
But yes, they are getting some big inches out of the Windsor engines,
and it makes for a very compact and light package. The main benefit
of the big inch Ford small block over a big inch chevy small block is
the ability to use the 4bbl Cleveland heads that already have big
block sized ports and valves. Bolted into something like an early
Falcon, and you'd have a real sleeper!
The Modifieds do seem to have a tendancy to spin main bearings unless
carefully set up. I believe there were some oiling system mods one
could apply, but don't remember them right off hand.
One thing is for sure, used 351/400M engines are cheap and plentiful!
