That's one of the downsides of living in a relatively "free" country,
Ryan... RIGHTS! I have the right to NOT BE REPRESENTED by an external
organization if I choose. When starting in the transportation
industry I was shaken down for money by more than one Shop Steward,
and when going independant by driving a Chinese owned cab... the goons
would get in my cab, late at night, and the "you owe us money" routine
would begin again.
Luckily I was tough in those days... got a couple of them, a couple of
them got me... they backed-off a little but kept the harassment up for
nearly 20 years.
Never crossed a legal picket-line; never took another man's job; never
was a company man, and fought all the injustices... not just the one's
"our side" was concerned with.
With rare exception, benefits were provided for me AND the working
environment was a lot less stressful. I didn't need to worry about
someone with more seniority screwing up at another location coming
over and taking my job. I've worked consistantly with no layoffs and
made as much, if not more, than any "protected" counterpart.
The only place I've seen OTJ harassment has been in Union Shops, too,
as well as sabatoge. I believe people should have the RIGHT to join a
union if they wish. I also belive people should have the RIGHT to NOT
JOIN a union, if they wish. I've yet to come across any union which
belives in this type of fair play.
