Oh & BTW a mate does this entirely with a "semi-live" distro
on a USB stick. copy the stick to backup. He fishes out his USB stick as
& when he needs "his" pc.

Semi live in that it looks to see if the h'w has changed & if not keeps
the settings as per usual.

You can mount /home on a separate stick/USB disk if you need the room.

Sheesh this ain't rocket science.
