Every time I hear all about (digital music players, DVD players, flat =
panel TVs, HDTVs, etc) the numbers do nothing but go up.
Hmm. Maybe they are.

Every time I hear about how much so and so is loosing due to pirating, =
the=20
numbers do nothing but go up. I have never heard anyone claiming that =
the=20
dollar losses due to piracy have been reduced. In the early 1990's =
they=20
claimed a billion dollars a year lost to piracy, then it was 4bn then =
10bn=20
now we are up to $50bn per year world wide. I mean come on.. Oh and =
don't go=20
and quote any bullshit percentage numbers, I'm counting dollars here.
And since these numbers cover all the software in the world, well then =
it=20
only makes sense that they also cover all the copy protection in the =
world=20
doesn't it?
Anyone here can tell you about the spams hocking office, it's nothing =
new.

One the basis of one offer you make this claim? Also, from where =
did you=20
pull the nonsense "all the copyprotection in the world"?

I just got a spam offering me office 2007 for $70, you want to =

me
how all the copyprotection in the world PLUS the best spam filters=20
available
has failed to even make a dent in this?

Piracy was an issue with the VCR. Pirates set up banks of =
recorders to
make pirate copies. It was time consuming and had real costs both =
in time
and in physical media. CDs and DVDs have the same but costs are =
much=20
lower.
Sure there is money to be made but that doesn't excuse piracy. The =
issue=20
is
that the balance between the cost of real product and the cost or =
pirated
copies has shifted dramatically. Pirated copies now have a cost =
that is
effectively zero.
If is not your place to set the price for someone else's work. =
If you
don't like the price don't buy it. If you steal it you are a crook =
and
should come clean. If you ever create something of your own, and in =
years
of discussing this you have never hinted that you are likely ever to =
do=20
so,
you can set your own price.

This is the same argument that they used against the VCR, it =
allows=20
anyone
to pirate stuff soooo easily... and yet it enabled the movie =
industries=20
to
make more money than they ever dreamed possible.
The internet is no different.
You need to understand something, people are basically honest =
folks who
pay
for what they want. All you need to do is figure out what they =
want and
make
it available at a price point that they find acceptable. The =
internet is=20
a
wet dream for this if the copyright nuts don't fuck it up with =
their=20
same
old nonsense.

Stronger protections are due to one thing, technological =
advances=20
that
make piracy easier with increases in connection speeds being a =
major one
if
not the major one. 10 years ago people didn't steal movies over =
the
internet like they do today because it wasn't practical. 20 years =
ago=20
you
had to distribute physical media which took significant time to=20
duplicate.
I don't see copy protection restrictions becoming any more=20
restrictive.
They seem focused on one thing, don't allow unlicenced copying.
It's very interesting that this seems to affect your life so =
much. I
could see this if you are one of the folks active in pirating =
software=20
and
content. I can't think of a single example where any such =
restrictions
have
affected me but I'm not a pirate.

The whole thing is being motivated by the desire of the software =
and
content
industries to have more and more restrictive options for copy=20
protection
and
licensing use.
