I have run minimal systems before, but never with anything as complex as Linux. A bit more HDD and RAM usually makes many applications run a lot more smoothly. I once ran MS-Word 5 on an early Macintosh with 256k RAM and a single floppy drive. This required juggling three disks, one with the System files, one with Word, and the third with the document I was trying to edit. IIRC at one stage I counted over twenty disk swaps in a row.
