The owner's manual for every car I've had (including the
current ones) describes "severe service" as mostly stop-and-go
driving and many short trips.
Driving on the highway is considered "normal service."
Of course, it's not uncommon for people to become
grandparents by 40 years old and they don't drive like little
old ladies in tennis shoes. In fact, nowadays many of the
little old ladies in tennis shoes don't drive much different
than younger people.
(Yes, I know some of them do, but a lot of them are just
about as active as they ever were, and drive accordingly.)
