It seems it's by design. According to the help:

"To receive alerts, you must be a member of the Administrators group
for your computer."

So my choices appear to be either allowing AU to install automatically
without notification (which I would rather not do), or periodically logging
on as administrator to see if there are alerts. However, if I have to
remember to check periodically, I probably won't.
