-[ Quoting William Elliot , to Dennis Menard ]-
DM> We might try. But, judging from past successes ... :(
WE> Didn't Canada complain about US exports of acid rain to no avail?
WE> Seems the US was dumping excess production capacity.
:( When one "negotiates" with a superpower, the superpower has a tendency
to negotiate, thus: Negotiate? Sure. We want -- and -- and --! However, if
we don't get it, we're going to take our ball and go home.
Once upon a time, superpowers used to be called Empires. The Romans had an
empire; then the British had one ... not as long, though. Now the U.S. has
one, though we call it a superpower. Question: How long will it last? And
what will replace it? :)
Hmm ... Think I'll go don my asbestos parka now ... :)
WE> Would you explain how these unintended consequences apply to Quebec?
Nothing applies to Quebec except what Quebec wants applied to it. And even
they don't know what that is: half want this ... the other half wants that.
:) :) Trying to explain Quebec (unless you're a Quebecois) is rather like
proving the existence of God. :)
WE> Same at life's the other end. As I recall, the right to die in Canada
WE> is a moot question as suicide is legal.
DM> Yes, sort of. The problem, like the U.S., is that if you are
DM> physically unable to do the deed yourself, you cannot legally get
DM> assistance to exer- cise your right to commit suicide. Of course, you
DM> can get assistance to exercise "other rights" like, access to buildings
DM> with disabled-unfriendly entrances, etc. Clearly, discrimination.
WE> So is all quiet on this in Canada? Canada is willing to let very
WE> premature babies not have extraordinary life support?
I don't think all is quiet on this is Canada, but there is nothing overt at
this time; involved parties are likely simmering and just waiting a trigger
to start things boiling again. No, the Canadian Medical Association seems
to have assumed the same general position as its U.S. counterpart regarding
Preemies. What is different is the public medical system in Canada vs the
private one in the U.S.
A few months ago, a doctor (New Brunswick, I think) was charged with MURDER
of one of her patients (ie, a mercy-killing). I've heard nothing recently.
I'll see if I can do a follow-up.
