| subject: | Re: spyware techniques |
From: "Antti Kurenniemi"
There's a "new" breed of "security software" that is
being used a lot here, and it's basically firewall+virus
scanner+anti-spyware wrapped into one by an ISP, and provided with a ADSL
or cable modem connection to protect gramps. They've been coming out since
about last summer, when there was a court ruling saying that ISP's have
some responsibility over their customers (I don't know the exact details,
never could be bothered to find out).
While basically the idea is almost ok, the implementations I've seen (and
had to fix) are unbelievably wild. Since there's a lot of stuff all rolled
into one, it's obviously a lot of stuff to master, but for ma and pa you
can't ask them to learn all that so hey, let's make everything automatic!
So the damn things re-configure themselves on the fly all the time, and are
a real bitch to lock down on something or allow something else. I just
spent a good few hours removing one setup from a woman who wanted to
remotely access her work computer: I installed NetOP, and the
"security" software started arguing with me, so I removed it and
went with AVG+Sygate, but something remained from the old program(s) and it
was a real mess.
What I'm saying is, I think the next step will be these
"all-in-one" security apps, which basically might be a good thing
- or then again maybe not. In any case, I wouldn't mind getting at least 12
processes less running on a basic computer .

(AVG + Sygate, now there's a nifty pair of software I've grown to like :-)
