Actually, I don't think it is the nat.  I try to telnet directly to the
internal ip address and have the same issue, which should skip the NAT
entirely.  It's definitely a network issue of some sort, but I can't figure
it out.  I've been contemplating taking the bbs down entirely any way, so
this is just hastening toward that end :(.

Yep, it's the NAT.  I wonder if I need a new one (this is a relatively new
symptom) or if there's something else I can do to get telnet connections to
answer faster.

Try telneting in to localhost (from that same machine) and if you don't
see the delay then its a NAT issue.
