MR> I've finally decided to start restoring my Grandmother's 1972
MR> 4-door Lincoln Continental. It's been sitting in an unheated garage
MR> for about 12 years (NC weather). Grandma drove it in there- it
MR> wasn't broken or towed or anything. She just didn't like the mileage
MR> it got. I have a feeling I won't like the mileage either.
:)
MR> Now I've got this sneaking feeling that it will need a bit
MR> more than this after sitting for 12 years in a row. The engine has
Well, you'll need to change the oil filter, too, but most people include
that in an oil change anyway. It also might be a good idea, if you're
driving it a long way to get home, it might be a good idea to change the
oil TWICE before you take it. Change it once, run it for a while off idle
to warm it up well, change it again, then take it home. Also, check the
tranny fluid condition and level, and the differential oil level, too.
After 12 years, you never know how much has leaked out, and those things
ain't cheap, ya know?!
MR> 84,000 miles on it, so I'd imagine at least a few things have gone
Well, if it was parked 12 years ago, that means it was only 13 years old
when it was parked. And with only 84,000 miles in 13 years, that's not
a heck of a lot. Especially for a car built like that, and driven by a
grandma. (That is, if she drives like all the grandma's I've ever
seen! :) ) I had near 200,000 miles on an old V8 Malibu before it needed
anything at all doing to the engine, and I drove that thing HARD! I
doubt you'll have any problems with it mechanically.
MR> bad. But we shall see. With my luck, the brakes will go while I'm
MR> steering it along I-40. I'm no mechanic, so this will be one big
MR> nightmarish learning experience for me.
But you'll be able to fix ANYTHING on it if it breaks down after you're
driving it! :)
MR> BTW, what size engine does this thing have, and if things come to
MR> worse, will it fit in the bay of a 64 Fairlane?
Well, you can fit a 460 in the bay of a Fairlane (barely!) and i think
that's the widest block made by FoMoCo, so I think it'll fit. As far as
what engine it actually has, ??!?!?!?!?
                             ^^^^^^^^^^ There's my guess! :)
I'd be tempted to say one of 3. Either a 351 of one form or another, a 400,
or a 460. Of course, I could be wrong.
Good luck with it!
You'll have to let us all know how it's going.
Chris
