I agree.  A friend of mine accidently lost her two budgies to a door
that was opened...and it wasn't opened long.
What about windows?  You can't keep them covered all the time.  Birds
need sunshine coming in.

I think it is great that you feel the responsibility to keep your bird
safe and healthy.
