Mt Ruapehu, most likely - just south of Lake Taupo, the water
filled remains of a huge volcano which erupted last in Biblical
times, spreading ash over Australia and the South Pacific and
recorded in Roman records as colouring their skies for many
months. I heard an enthusiastic vulcanologist say he'd wanted to
watch it blow again - from Sydney, Australia, 2000kms away....

I recall one of my ABC instructors urging each of us to maintain a
slit trench at all times, with the debris neatly packed on a
piece of PVC alongside. The drill in event of atomic warfare was
to take cover in it, pull the PVC's contents over one ... and thus
leave the place as tidy as one found it...
Ah me...
:-))
