I heat with electricity, and have no idea really how much it costs - I just
pay the bills and be done with it ;-) No, seriously, it's not very much,
maybe 70 euros per month average around the year (the bill is about 90 of
which most is heating, I think - it's not separated in any way).
During the winter, when it's cold, we burn the fireplace. It's a big ol'
thang that reserves heat in what is called "central wall" in
Finnish, a mass of bricks around the chimney in the middle of the house.
It's still warm the next day. I don't know if it reduces the electricity
bill (plus I pay for the wood also so big deal), but it's definately nice
and comfy.
And yes, plenty of insulation needed. Triple glazing is the standard, plus
you want to make sure there's no draft.
