   This is true - but being unarmed can be intimidating when everyone else 
about you is armed and appears to be bent on doing damage to your person.
   No telephone gets dialed as fast as a bullet, and no cop responds as fast 
as a bullet - and it is a small comfort the to person who gets killed that 
the 
cops arrived and eventually nailed someone for the crime.
   The reason that the six-gun came to be called the equalizer was that it 
made a smal person in danger of physical harm the equal of those who wuld 
harm 
him.  The mere presence of a gun will many times keep things from happening. 
NOBODY I know whats to be involved in a shooting; no matter how right you are 
it changes you for the rest of your life - but if the mere presence of a 
weapon will delay any activity until the properly constituted authority has 
time to arrive, then it is all to the good.
   That having been said, unless you are prepared to use a weapon, you might 
as well resolve to be a victim.  Gordon Liddy tells a story (probably 
apocryphal) about his graduation from FBI agent school, at which time all the 
brandamnew agenst received a briefcase and a gun.  They were instructed to 
hold the gun pointed at the cieling in front of them, and to observe the size 
and shape of the front sight.  Someone, of course, had to ask why they were 
doing this, and the response was something to the effect of "we have a 
gunsmith here who will file it off for you if you are not prepared to use it 
- 
because if you aren't prepared to use the weapon, someone will take it from 
you and insert it in your arse - and it doesn't hurt as bad with the sight 
filed off!"
   The desired result is to put enough of a chill on what's being 
comtemplated 
to cause it not to happen.  If the chill doesn't work, and you are not 
prepared to go to the next level, you may accrue more harm for having been 
strong part of the way - the goblin has more face to regain.
