Sigh. There were XT clones that had an 8086. E.g. the AT&T 6300 (not the 
6300+ !!!) which was essentially identical to the Olivetti M24.
And the 8086 had a slightly larger prefetch queue than the 8088 -- which made 
it possible to use software to detect the difference. Dirty trick though: 
self modifying code ...
