Are you sure it is not just a view option setting in regedt32, and that you
can really see it in both? Is the key actually grayed out in regedt32?
What are the permissions on that key on your system? Could you be running
regedt32 and regedit from two different accounts?
BTW, I just discovered that XP has a command line tool for reading and
writing the registry:
reg query hklm\system\controlset001\control\class\
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\Properties
