 Yup, a lot of the old expressions have unexplainable origins,
 but I think "don't get your teat caught in a wringer" is still
 understood.

 They had a big lever on top, Smack that baby hard and the wringer
 popped open.  Hurt like crazy to get fingers caught in there,
 figuring it was squeezing hard enough to wring out most of the
 water before hanging on a clothesline.

 I still have a cloths line and a couple poles out in the garage,
